History:
Springfield M14 was a successor to the legendary US Army M1 Garand service rifle. M14 was also designed by John Garand and has it's roots in late World War II tests with M1 Garand which had 20-round M1918 BAR magazine custom attached. In the early 1950s T37 evolved into the T44 experimental rifle, which featured redesigned, self-regulated gas system with short stroke gas piston. Further development and tests lead to the slightly modified T44E4 and T44E5 (heavy barreled squad automatic weapon) prototypes, which were finally adopted by US Army as M14 and M15 rifles in the 1957.
However, in 1964 the production of Springfield M14 was terminated - due to direct feedback from personnel in Vietnam. The M14 was too heavy and long for jungle warfare enviroment plus it's heavy 7.62mm ammunition posed problems for controlled full automatic firing and the amount of ammunition individual soldiers could carry to battle.
