History:
XM177E2 has it's roots in Colt's CAR-15 "Survival Rifle" project that had been created to develop weapon to arm United States Air Force aircraft crews. From that failed project XM177 was born. It had a new more durable telescope stock and a specially designed suppressor to combat huge muzzle flash that the shortened barrel was causing. E1 version introduced the forward-assist knob that was standardized by introduction of M16A1 and E2 version finally lenghtened the barrel to 11.5 inches in order to deal with the continuing muzzle flash problem.
XM177 was primarily used by US Navy SEALS in Vietnam and it's direct replacement in SEAL teams was the now hugely popular M4 Carbine.
