Submachine guns were widely used in Vietnam War by all sides. United States distributed many of it's WWII surplus submachine guns to their South Vietnamese allies such as South Vietnamese Civil Guard, Montagnards and ARVN. Both South Vietnamese and Vietcong utilized German MP40 and Soviet WWII submachine guns (i.e. PPSh-41) that had found their way to Asia. Free World special forces units tended to use modern submachine guns of German, Swedish, Australian and US manufacture. Regular US Army units continued to field submachine guns like M3A1 Grease Gun and modern carbines were still in short supply.
