United States distributed many of it's WWII surplus submachine guns to their South Vietnamese allies such as South Vietnamese Civil Guard, Montagnards and ARVN. Both South Vietnamese and Vietcong utilized German MP40 and Soviet WWII submachine guns (i.e. PPSh-41) that had found their way to Asia. Free World special forces units tended to use modern submachine guns of German, Swedish, Australian and US manufacture. Regular US Army units continued to field submachine guns like M3A1 Grease Gun and modern carbines were still in short supply. New features included larger ejection port, change of cocking method and possibility to to convert the gun to accept both 9mm Parabellum ammo and British Sten SMG magazines. Despite it's similarity in appearance to US Army vehicle tire grease injection tool (hence the name) the M3A1 Grease Gun had several good practical features. In Grease Gun the ejection port functions as safety device as it is connected to bolt via projecting log. When ejection port is closed the bolt is locked on either cocked or battery position. To fire the weapon the cover was simply opened. Slow rate of fire (450rds per minute), straight line of recoil and relatively heavy weight of 4.5kgs (fully loaded) made the gun easier to handle as operator could control their automatic fire. Compact retractacle wire stock doubled as disassembly tool made Grease Gun weapon that was distributed first and foremost to vehicle crews. In Vietnam War M3A1 Grease Gun was outdated for frontline duty, but nevertheless it was distributed to South Vietnamese irregular troops , such as Civil Guard, for combat duty. Thanks to it's compact size American helicopter pilots carried M3A1 Grease Gun, in addition of their pistols, for the grave situation of being shot down behind enemy lines. Other US users included USMC and US Army special forces. Captured samples were employed by Vietcong. M3A1 Grease Gun was even copied by communist China who manufactured with model name Type 64.
